Prozac & Stomach Pain

Prozac is the brand name of the antidepressant fluoxetine made by Eli Lilly and Company. Other brand names are Rapidflux and Sarafem. Although nausea is a common side effect of Prozac, a less common one is stomach pain or cramping.
  1. Identification

    • Stomach and abdominal pain as a side effect of Prozac may come by itself or coupled with other symptoms. These include vomiting, gastritis or blood in a person's stool.

    Frequency

    • According to Drugs.com, stomach pain and blood in the stool were a rare side effect in Prozac clinical trials.

    Significance

    • Eli Lilly and Drugs.com notes that abdominal or muscle pain can be the sign of a severe reaction. Anyone taking Prozac that gets stomach pain should call a doctor at once.

    Complications

    • The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism warns that anyone on Prozac should not drink alcoholic beverages. This can increase the risk of the stomach bleeding, which will cause pain and black, tar-like feces.

    Other Medications

    • Eli Lilly and Company also notes that chances for stomach bleeding can rise if a person is taking fluoxetine and blood thinners like warfarin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAIDs).
