How to Prevent Teen Suicide

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescents between the ages of 10 and 24, and males are four times more likely to complete suicide than females. Depression is the biggest contributing factor to suicide and often times there are many warning signs prior to a suicide attempt. The key to prevention is open and honest communication.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the warning signs of a suicidal teenager. Think about your teen's behavior patterns. Compare his irritability, eating habits, sleep habits, appearance, workload and personality over the course of the year. A drastic change in any one of these behaviors is cause for concern.

    • 2

Reassure her that you're there to listen and not to judge. Tell her that you love her and that together you can get through any problem or situation.

    • 3

Talk to your teen about his life and feelings. Assure him that he isn't alone and that everyone goes through hard times. Tell him that it's the hard times and life experiences that make stronger people in the long run.

    • 4

Rid your home of all firearms, pills, knives and rope. The risk of teen suicide increases when there is easy access to these weapons.

    • 5

Seek the help of a professional. Ask your family doctor to evaluate your child and recommend a psychiatrist or counselor. In some cases, prescription drugs are necessary.
