Instructions

    • 1

Keep walking, one foot in front of the other, when a difficulty arises. Remember the words "This too shall pass."

    • 2

Bring to mind any spiritual exercises that have worked for you in the past. Recall in particular the exercises which have helped you the most when you felt there was no hope, and latch onto them.

    • 3

Think of heroes or heroines who have inspired you. Reflect on the reasons why they inspired you, and how they handled difficult situations. Learn from and emulate saints, leaders and everyday "overcomers" of problems--not rock stars or TV celebrities.

    • 4

Talk to a good friend. Go to a funny movie with someone else or by yourself. Talk to a priest, minister or another spiritual adviser. Get therapy. You can handle defeat better if you remember all you have to do is get up one more time after you fall.

    • 5

Be active. Work out. Eat healthy. Touch heals, so give someone a hug and get one at the same time.

    • 6

Try to put the problem on a mental shelf. Promise yourself you'll work on it a little bit at a time as you must get on with your life and not let the problem consume you. Throw yourself into your work, constructive projects and hobbies.

    • 7

Look under every rock and in every cranny to find what works best for you. Stand up for yourself and be your strongest defender, and forgive yourself when necessary.
