Topics to Do While Mentoring At-Risk Teenagers

At-risk teens need a lot of guidance, support and direction as they struggle with many issues including peer pressure, dating and relationships, substance abuse, low self-esteem and how to manage their emotions. Whether you are mentoring one teen or a group of teens, be sure to ask them what topics would be most important or helpful for them to address.
  1. Anger Management

    • Many at-risk teenagers have trouble managing their anger. If you are mentoring teens, address anger management with them by having a group session or talking one-on-one with each teen. Identify triggers and teach youth that they have a choice in how they react to these triggers. Explain anger management strategies such as how to calm themselves down, and teach them relaxation techniques.

    Substance Abuse

    • Young people going through difficult struggles may turn to drugs or alcohol as an escape and a way to feel better. Substance abuse is an important topic, and youth need to learn about the dangers of using drugs and drinking alcohol. Be sure to provide information on how teenagers can obtain effective treatment for substance abuse.

    Low Self-Esteem

    • Address low self-esteem with teenagers you are mentoring. Ask the teens to make a list of their positive qualities. Explain to them how to keep a mood diary in which they track negative thoughts and substitute them with positive thoughts. Provide a list of positive affirmations for them to practice reading out loud, such as, "My worth is not dependent on what others think of me."

    Dating and Relationships

    • Teens are typically very curious about dating and relationships. If you are mentoring at-risk teens, you have a good opportunity to educate them about the consequences of participating in sexual relationships. Discuss what qualities to look for in a girlfriend or boyfriend, how to identify a healthy relationship and about the warning signs of abusive partner.
