How to Prepare for a Character Evaluation

Whether you are preparing for a job interview, an evaluation of moral character for law school or a child custody evaluation, your top priority should be to present yourself in the best possible light. Attempting to present any false information about yourself is a bad idea, because most people can tell when you're not being truthful. In addition, any false information you present know is likely to catch up with you in the future. Take time to be both physically and mentally prepared for the evaluation. The better prepared you are, the more relaxed and confident you will be.

Brainstorm about all of the relevant material and factual information you may need to recall during the evaluation. This may include drawing a timeline of important dates, such as the year your child was born, the date you graduated from college or the years you were employed at a particular job. Having these facts at your fingertips will help you to appear sharp and responsible. Jot down ideas for answers to important questions that may come up during the evaluation, such as why you want to work in a particular field or your strengths and weaknesses.

    • 2

Consider any behaviors you may have that could work against you during the evaluation. When you're nervous, do you tap your foot, crack your knuckles or have difficulty maintaining eye contact? Practice controlling these habits in the days leading up to the evaluation.

    • 3

Have a friend or family member help you practice for the evaluation. This will help you be more confident and relaxed during the real evaluation.

    • 4

Choose an appropriate outfit, and have it washed and ironed well in advance. Trim your nails and get a haircut if needed. Do things that help you to relax, such as yoga or meditation. Avoid alcohol or caffeine the night before so you can get a good night's sleep.

    • 5

Eat a good breakfast in the morning, and remember to brush your teeth and comb your hair. While it is technically your character that matters, your appearance will definitely be taken into consideration.

    • 6

Take a few deep breaths before going into your evaluation, and remember to be yourself. Smile, relax and try to be as comfortable as possible throughout the process.
