How to Adjust My Attitude As a Teenager

Many teenagers develop a poor attitude to school, authority and their families as they navigate the teen years. Some teens recognize their poor attitude and want to make adjustments in order to lead more positive lives and to create healthier relationships with those around them. If you want to adjust your attitude as a teenager, then you must be committed to the transformation.

      Identify your main reasons for wanting to change your attitude. It might be that you want to have a better relationship with your parents and siblings, or because you've found yourself in a scary or threatening situation that you do not want to repeat. Whatever the reasons, keep them in mind to help you stay focused.

      Modify your social environment. If you hang out with friends who have poor attitudes, it will be harder for your to adjust your own because their behavior can influence yours. Surround yourself with more positive people who have the type of attitude you want to emulate. These individuals can serve as your role models.

      Make a list of the things that make you happy, such as hobbies. To adjust your attitude it is imperative to engage in activities that you enjoy. Simple pleasures such as swimming or reading a book can help you to stay positive and focused on your attitude adjustment.

      Tune out negative thoughts. This is not an easy to do, but it is important to monitor your thoughts and reframe the way you see things. For instance, rather than becoming angry about having to do homework in the evenings, reframe your thought about the activity so that you see homework as an opportunity to learn something new. Or, if your parents make you go on a family trip, avoid rolling your eyes and throwing a tantrum and, instead, joke with your siblings about how it will be fun to watch the goofy stuff your dad does.

      Surround yourself with positive entertainment. Put away music, movies and posters that have angry lyrics or lines and replace them with more peaceful options.

      Seek outside support. Let others know that you want to adjust your attitude and that you could use their support. Your parents, siblings, teachers, church leaders or anyone else in the community will be willing to help you to make your life more positive. If necessary, you might even consider seeking the guidance of a teen counselor who can help you to stay on track with your attitude adjustment.
