How to Study Math to Increase Your IQ

Math ability on an IQ test is a measure of working memory and sustained attention rather than pure math achievement. This is because an IQ test is different from an achievement test in that it seeks to measure aptitude rather than a specific skill set. For instance, on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test, which a widely used IQ test, arithmetic is used to make up the Working Memory Index. So, in order to study math to increase IQ, it is important to exercise working memory and complex attention.

      Shuffle a deck of cards

      Lay two cards face down

Flip cards and view them for 5 seconds

Cover them and record the cards (numbers only)

Move the cards to the side

Repeat, adding a card to the sequence each time

    • 2

      Engage in advanced numerical manipulation

Repeat the above steps with new cards

Record the sequence of cards backward

    • 3

      Add a mental arithmetic component

Choose two cards and lay them in front of you

Flip them and view for 5 seconds

Cover the cards and add the numbers in your head

      Record response

Repeat, adding a card to the sequence each time

    • 4

      Analyze results

Use the graph paper to record correct sequence length for cards (forward, backward and addition)

Compare the values to find strengths and weaknesses

Practice daily in order to improve areas of weakness
