Guide to Improving Self Confidence

Self-confident people have a positive but realistic perception of their abilities and character. If you lack self-confidence, you may suffer from self-doubt, depression, passivity or extreme sensitivity to criticism. Other people's criticisms and actions can damage your self-confidence, but it's up to you to rebuild it.
  1. Causes

    • Causes of low self-confidence include negative experiences, such as failures, criticism from parents, teachers or supervisors, or the loss of a friend or partner. People who move far away from friends and family, set unrealistic goals for themselves or are terrified of failure are also likely to suffer from low self-confidence.

    Tips

    • Improve your self-confidence by setting realistic goals and rewarding or praising yourself once you reach your goals. Look for the positive aspects of all situations, including setbacks. Take care of yourself by eating well, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly. Forgive yourself for failures---no one's perfect.

    Considerations

    • Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Learn to focus on and accentuate your skills, and don't expect to be perfect in every area. When you're feeling down, remind yourself of your past accomplishments. Make a list, if necessary.

    Significance

    • Low self-confidence impairs your performance at work or school and can also cause problems with your personal relationships. People with low self-confidence are also at a higher risk of depression, anxiety and drug or alcohol abuse.
