How to Clear a Restless Mind

The powerful mind makes people human, but it can also drive people crazy. The restless mind's wandering can exacerbate feelings of stress, anger and sadness. Through meditation, you can gain control over this and become a more calm and centered person. Although it seems simple, sitting still and clearing a restless mind can feel like a losing battle as thoughts continually arise. However, with patience and practice, you can clear your restless mind, decrease stress and lessen anxiety.

Instructions

  1. Meditate

    • 1

Sit in a comfortable location with a straight back. Choose a chair or rest on the ground --- whatever works for you. If keeping your eyes open, gaze down in front of your nose.

    • 2

Focus on the breath as you sit. Avoid breathing a particular way. Just breathe naturally and notice how the air feels flowing in your nose and through your body.

    • 3

Label any thought that arises as, "thinking." Accept the thought without following it, and don't get angry for the mind's wandering. Simply accept the mind's restlessness and return to noticing the breath.

    • 4

Sit for 10 or 20 minutes. Buddhist master Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche recommends sitting for short periods of time a couple of times during the day instead of one, longer period.
