ADHD Fact Sheet

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a common condition that affects children and teenagers. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders affecting children.
  1. Symptoms

    • Children with ADHD often display symptoms of inability to concentrate or pay attention, as well as hyperactivity and impulsiveness. These symptoms often lead to poor grades, frequent disciplinary action and a lack of friends.

    Causes

    • According to WebMD.com, factors such as heredity, chemical imbalance, brain changes, head trauma, poor nutrition and exposure to toxins are all possible causes of ADHD.

    Treatment

    • There is no cure for ADHD, but treatments are available. Medication, counseling and social skills training are all possible treatments for ADHD. These treatments help a child cope with the symptoms of ADHD.

    Outlook

    • The outlook is good for children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, because treatment can help a child deal with his symptoms. When ADHD is not diagnosed, the child is at risk for poor grades, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety disorders and conduct disorders.
