Oregon Disability & ADHD

According to the Social Security Administration, as an Oregon resident you could be considered disabled if you have experienced Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) for at least one year, you cannot hold the same type of job you were trained to do previously and you cannot be trained to work in another field as an effect of your physical or mental health. You must be considered totally disabled and cannot receive Social Security benefits for a partial disability. Social Security benefits are determined at the federal level rather than by Oregon state officials.
  1. Types of Social Security Disability Benefits

    • SSI and SSDI provide benefits to assist with basic needs.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides benefits to people who are elderly, legally blind or otherwise disabled to help pay for food, clothing and basic shelter. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides a disabled person and some family members with income if the beneficiary worked and paid Social Security taxes.

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

    • ADHD is displayed by inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity.

ADHD is displayed by a high level of inattention, impulsive decisions and hyperactivity. To be diagnosed with ADHD, you must display all three symptoms and must show that your impairment causes inappropriate cognition, communication, socialization, self-care skills or concentration.

    Application for Disability Benefits

    • Documents to apply for benefits are available at Social Security Administration offices.

A child or adult with ADHD needs to be assessed by the Social Security Administration in order to qualify for benefits. To start the process, you submit an application for benefits and a disability report. Both documents are available at your area's Social Security Administration office or by calling the national Disability Determination Services department at 800-452-2147.
