National Credit Union Foundation Housing Counseling Grant

The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) is the recipient of a grant of more than $710,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The foundation will use the money to develop housing counseling services for low-income families that have never owned homes before. The services will be provided by 22 different nonprofit credit unions to counsel the new homeowners on such issues as effective budgeting and the importance of timely mortgage payments.

Missouri Foundation for Health: St. Louis Grants

Throughout the city of St. Louis, Missouri, 37 nonprofit organizations were awarded over $2.5 million in grants by the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH). Many of the nonprofits that received grants were counseling centers that help people with mental health issues. For example, the Agape Christian Counseling Center received $75,000 for counseling services to low-income families, and the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma received $75,000 to provide mental health services to soldiers and family members affected by those experiences.

Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program Grants

The U.S. Department of Education offers a grant to local education agencies (LEAs) to build, develop or increase the counseling departments at elementary and secondary educational facilities. To qualify for the grant, the programs must develop a preventive approach, provide in-service training to advance the abilities of counselors, or add staffing to the counseling departments.

SAMHSA Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers many counseling grant opportunities. One is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow Up grant. The purpose of this program is to establish an effective system to follow up on individuals who call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline program. Many people who have had suicidal tendencies have recurrent episodes. This grant allows counselors to check on patients after the initial intervention.
