Signs of Autism in Older Children
Autism is a disorder that makes communicating and relating to other people difficult. This is stressful not only for the autistic person but also for those who interact with him regularly. Luckily, information on the disorder has become more prevalent, not only allowing parents to understand what their child is going through but also illuminating the signs so they can get help for their child as quickly as possible.-
Causes
-
It is not clear what causes autism, though scientists believe it is inherited. There are other studies being conducted to determine whether there are environmental causes.
Development
-
Autism is congenital, meaning that the child is born with it.
Older Child
-
As a child becomes older, parents may notice he is not talking or that he has begun to talk and then stopped. He also may not like to be held.
Teenager
-
An autistic teenager will have trouble dealing with others socially. If he is in a higher intelligence bracket he may have issues with depression and anxiety.
Treatment
-
You can help your child via several treatments, including behavioral training and management, therapies for your child's specific problems--such as speech therapy--and community support. Your child may also be prescribed medicine for related conditions like depression and anxiety.
