Narcissistic Characteristics

Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD, is a Cluster B personality disorder as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) produced by the American Psychiatric Association. Clinical narcissists suffer from several debilitating characteristics that damages not only their lives, but the lives of those around them.
  1. Grandiosity

    • Narcissists have an inflated view of their own importance. They often lie about their accomplishments and present comparatively minor achievements in an unduly positive light.

    Entitlement

    • Because narcissists believe they are special, they expect to be given preferential treatment regardless of whether they have earned it or not.

    Callousness

    • Narcissists have an inability to identify with the feelings and emotions of others. They simply don't consider other people's needs important.

    Exploitation

    • Narcissists are often very charming and personable, traits they use to take advantage of others.

    Neediness

    • Underneath their egotistical exterior, narcissists require constant validation and support. They can't stand the idea of other people being the center of attention.
