Latino Counseling Techniques
-
Therapeutic Relationship
-
In therapy, be respectful, warm and formally dressed. Hispanic Americans often desire a more formal relationship with the counselor as the therapist is often seen as an authority figure.
Language
-
People who have immigrated might have a language barrier. Assess whether a translator is needed and do not assume slow speech as a sign of depression or cognitive delay.
Confidentiality
-
Some immigrants might not be aware of the level of confidentiality required in the American system. It is important to explain the limits of confidentiality and what will remain confidential.
Nationality
-
It is important to understand the immigration status. Individuals who are new to the country will require different techniques and information than an individual who has lived in the country all of his life.
Cultural Elements
-
It is important to understand the cultural elements of behavior. Family structures, societal expectations and emotional reactions have cultural aspects that might differ from other populations or the counselor's expectations.
