Side Effects of Discontinuing Effexor
Effexor XR is used to treat symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. But quitting the medication cold turkey can create a whole host of additional stresses, and a whole new set of physical and/or emotional problems. That's why you are always encouraged to work with your doctor to taper off of the drug before you either try to lower the dosage or stop taking the drug on your own.-
Discontinuation
-
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Effexor XR, says you can't become addicted to the drug because it's not a controlled substance. As such, you won't suffer from traditional withdrawal symptoms. But you can suffer from what's called discontinuation symptoms. Wyeth reports these symptoms can occur even if you miss just a few doses of the drug.
Prevalence
-
According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, not everyone who takes Effexor XR and abruptly stops it will suffer from what's called antidepressant discontinuation syndrome. If you've taken the drug for at least six months and suddenly stop it, there is a 20 percent chance you'll experience symptoms. These side effects are typically mild, and you'll typically experience relief from them in less than two weeks.
Flu-Like
-
Feeling like you've come down with the flu bug is a common discontinuation symptom, according to the Mayo Clinic. You may experience muscle weakness, exhaustion, gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea and an upset stomach.
Sensory
-
One of the most disturbing problems you may experience when you stop Effexor XR on the spot is the feeling of electrical "shocks" in your brain. Some have also reported disturbances in vision, and experiencing vertigo---the feeling that you are spinning or whirling.
Behavioral
-
Aggression, agitation, irritability and increased anxiety are also problems you may experience if you stop taking the drug, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. If you discontinue Effexor XR, the symptoms that drew you to turn to the drug for relief in the first place may be worsened. For example, mania as the result of depression may be elevated (a condition called hypomania).
Tapering Off
-
You'll never know these symptoms personally if you work with your doctor before you quit the drug entirely. This process is known as tapering, and it may take a few weeks or a few months, depending on your personal situation, according to Wyeth.
