Depression Self Help Techniques
As common as the common cold, depression plagues many of us from time to time. This disease can vary in severity. People who feel that their depression won't disappear or who have suicidal thoughts should immediately contact a physician. For those with a milder case of the blues, there are many self-help solutions to fight depression. Exercise, aromatherapy and even some supplements like omega-3 and flaxseed oil have been found to be effective.-
Exercise
-
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have found that exercise three to five times a week can positively impact one's mood. Even exercise 15-20 minutes daily can have an impact. The evidence suggests that exercising may increase neurotransmitter activity in the brain, thus enhancing one's mood.
Natural Remedies
-
Over the counter remedies can be an effective self-help measure for those battling depression, although due to drug interactions, a physician should be consulted before taking any remedy. Flaxseed oil, omega-3, and St. John's Wort are often recommended. They may be helpful for those suffering from mild depression, and they can also benefit heart health.
Aromatherapy
-
Although without much clinical research to back their claims, many people tout aromatherapy to relieve the symptoms of mild depression. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, and many people believe they can relieve some of the symptoms of depression. Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy to other solutions such as medication, exercise, etc. Some essential oils are bergamot, neroli and chamolmiles--most are diffused with a candle or used for massages. They can be found in health food stores or markets.
