How to Get Diagnosed for Adult ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder characterized by impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity. Adults with ADHD often have problems in jobs, relationships, school and daily living. There is no single test that diagnoses adult ADHD. A licensed mental health professional will use multiple factors to determine whether someone has ADHD. Only clinical psychologists, physicians and clinical social workers are able to make a proper diagnosis of ADHD. This health problem often runs in families.

Instructions

    • 1

Go over a checklist of symptoms with your doctor. There are checklists available online (see Resources) or a doctor can go through one with you.

    • 2

Describe the behavior that leads you to believe you may have adult ADHD.

    • 3

Bring a family member or close friend with you who can describe actions they have observed in you. There may be things you do not realize are happening that an outsider might observe.

    • 4

Compile a list of your health history, medication history and family history to give to the doctor.

    • 5

Answer questions the doctor asks of you. The doctor usually goes through rating scales to determine the severity of your symptoms.

    • 6

Undergo a physical examination or other medical tests to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.
