Despite the negative consequences that gamblers face by continuing with their behavior, the activity can become compulsive and unable to be stopped without treatment.

• Family members and friends lose trust in a compulsive gambler who lies, borrows money or does not follow through on commitments.

Moods

• Mood swings associated with problem gambling include irritability when the gambler tries to stop and depression following losing streaks.

Freedom

• As the gambling addiction progresses, the gambler takes increasingly dangerous risks to get money to continue or becomes involved in other illegal activities that may lead to incarceration.

Focus

• Concentration is affected when the gambler can't think about anything but the next game, race or other gambling venue.

Escape

• Other problems that require attention are ignored as the gambler uses increased gambling activities as a form of escape
