PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and Alzheimer's Disease are a part of life for millions of Americans. The two diseases are not directly related, and one does not cause the other. The symptoms of these disease vary. However, the effects of the diseases can be equally debilitating to the victims of these diseases and their family and friends.

Definitions

• PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and can occur because of extreme stressors involving life threatening events to oneself or others. Alzheimer's Disease is characterized by continuing cognitive decline.

Symptoms

• Symptoms of PTSD include, but are not limited to: intense fear, helplessness and persistent replaying of the traumatic event.The symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease may include progressive memory loss, trouble with motor skills, delusions and visual hallucinations.

Diagnosis

• PTSD is often diagnosed among soldiers, POWs (prisoners of war) and crime victims; the age range varies widely. Alzheimer's Disease is often diagnosed for those over 65.

Treatment

• Treatment of PTSD can include medications and counseling, while Alzheimer's Disease is treated using medications.
