What Is Depakote?

Depakote is a brand name drug that is often used to treat epilepsy, migraine headaches and bipolar disorder. While it has been proven to be effective when used for these conditions, it's important to know how it works and how it can affect individuals.
  1. Function

    • Depakote is a brand name for the drug divalproex sodium, manufactured by Abbott Pharmaceuticals. It acts on neurotransmitters to block or slow abnormal nerve impulses by boosting the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the patient's brain.

    Effects

    • According to Drug Information Online, Depakote acts as an anticonvulsant, making it useful to prevent seizures. It can also prevent migraine headaches and relieve the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder.

In addition to its beneficial effects, Depakote can have undesirable side effects. It can cause dizziness, blurry vision, diarrhea, tiredness, tremors and ringing sounds in the ears. eMedTV also warns that it can cause hair loss and weight gain.

    Forms

    • Depakote is available in two forms, both of which are only available with a prescription. It comes in capsule and tablet form, both of which feature a coating that delays the drug's release to prevent stomach irritation. Depakote comes in 125, 250 and 500 milligram pills. Generic versions are also available.

There is also an extended release form called Depakote ER, which allows the drug to act over a longer period of time.

    Storage

    • Depakote should be stored at room temperature and not be exposed to heat or moisture. This means that a bathroom medicine chest is not ideal, because showers can cause heat and humidity in the room. It should be kept in an airtight container and protected from children, because an overdose can cause heart problems, coma or even death.

    Warning

    • Depakote can interact negatively with a wide variety of other drugs. Although most are only available by prescription, it can cause problems if combined with aspirin. If your doctor prescribes Depakote, disclose all other prescription and over-the-counter medications you are currently taking. Depakote can also have adverse effects on a fetus if taken by a pregnant woman.
