How to Identify Relationship Addiction

While many people view the early intensity of a relationship as something desirable, this is not always the case. When it comes to relationship addiction, some people may sacrifice their mental health to compulsive relationships. If you are worried someone you care about may be a relationship addict, there are several signs which will help identify the disorder.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe your friend's current relationship. Is she currently in a relationship that appears to be unhappy? Has she been in this relationship for a long time?

    • 2

Take a look at the intervals between your friend's relationships. If he immediately replaces one relationship with another, you may have cause to be worried about his mental health.

    • 3

Ask your friend about some of her goals and ambitions. If she focuses on the role of her partner in her answer, it's a sign that her mental state depends too much on having a relationship.

    • 4

Spend time with your friend. If he feels guilty about spending time away from his partner, or if he seems to have lost the knack for socializing apart from his partner, it means he is sacrificing his time and health to maintaining a relationship.

    • 5

Get professional help for your friend, if you think she may be a relationship addict. Like with many other addictions, your friend probably denies she has a problem and goes to extravagant lengths to justify her erratic behavior. Direct confrontation might prove futile, so it's best to bring in the help of a mental health expert.
