How to Use the Online Hamilton Depression Scale
Many different standardized tests are used to assess symptoms of depression and anxiety. Most tests are administered in a medical setting and interpreted by a qualified mental health practitioner. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression is a 21-item test used to screen for depression and measure change in depressive behaviors. Items are scored between 0 and 3 or 4 by the person administering the test. Higher scores indicate more severe symptoms. The Hamilton Depression Scale can be taken online with an immediate result. Access the online version of the Hamilton Depression Scale. Answer each question by clicking on the dot next to the number that best describes your symptoms. Complete all 17 items for an accurate score. Items 18 through 21 provide additional information about your symptoms, however are not included in the calculated score.

Click on the "score" button at the bottom of the screen after the first 17 items have been answered. A score will pop up with a brief statement indicating whether the score is within normal range or if medical treatment should be sought. Scores greater than 28 can indicate severe depression.

Follow up with a medical provider if you are concerned that you might be depressed or if your score on the online Hamilton Depression Scale suggests that your result is not in the normal range.
