How to Identify Schizoid Behavior

Schizoid personality disorder is a condition in which an individual lacks the ability to form relationships and distances himself in social situations. In many cases, someone suffering from schizoid personality disorder finds little enjoyment in close relationships and has no interest in sexual contact with another person.

      Observe how the person reacts in social situations. Someone exhibiting schizoid behavior will be inept in social situations. Her indifference puts others ill at ease. People will avoid or ignore the person because interaction becomes awkward for both parties.

      Take note the person's friends. Interacting almost entirely with immediate family members is a sign of schizoid behavior. Those suffering from schizoid personality disorder will not have many close friends and will rationalize why friends are unnecessary. They often avoid romantic interaction.

      Notice the overall demeanor. Schizoid behavior manifests itself as a detached, aloof demeanor. A person will appear cold and uncaring, even to the people he loves the most. The person will also appear indifferent to praise or criticism.

      Ask about hobbies. People with schizoid personality disorder will prefer hobbies that can be done in solitude. Since they prefer little interaction with others, their hobbies are likely to involve activities that promote self-awareness and growth.

      Take occupation into account. Someone exhibiting schizoid behavior is much more likely enjoy a job that allows him to work at late at night or perform tasks that require very little interaction with others.
