Self Help: How to Build Ambition

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ambition as "an ardent desire for rank, power or fame." People with ambition tend to achieve goals and become very successful in life. There might be times when your ambition is low or you aren't sure if you even have any. Finding ways to build up your ambition will help you to find success in life.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of goals you want to achieve in the next week, month and year. Having several goals gives you something to work toward and look forward to. Break down larger goals into smaller steps so you do not overwhelm yourself and lose any ambition you have built up.

    • 2

Believe in yourself. A lack of ambition is sometimes caused by a lack of self-esteem. Believing in yourself and your ability to achieve a goal will help to increase your ambition. Make a list of your positive qualities if necessary and read them on a daily basis to build up your self-esteem, which will increase the amount of ambition you have in life.

    • 3

Choose a role model or someone you can look up to, someone who is highly ambitious. Model your life on this person's and see how he achieves his goals. Take some tips from this person and incorporate his strategies into your own lifestyle to increase your ambition and the likelihood of achieving your goals.

    • 4

Focus on your success and accomplishments, even if you don't achieve your goal the first time around. Focusing on what you did right will help you to not only correct past mistakes but give you the motivation and ambition to try again. Remain flexible in your approach and be willing to make changes if necessary.

    • 5

Develop a mantra or saying to use when you start to feel your ambition slipping away. For example, you could use the tried and true, "If at first you don't succeed, try again" or choose something more personal to you, such as "I can do this; I will achieve this goal no matter what." Having a personal saying will help keep you motivated to keep trying despite a failure and give you the ambition to try again.
