Things to Do When Upset
You will likely get upset from time to time for a variety of reasons. Learning how to effectively cope with disappointment, anger and being upset is a key component to living a happy life. There are many things you can do when you get upset to help alleviate the feeling and get you back on track.-
Journal Your Feelings
-
Write down what triggered you to become upset, how long the incident lasted and what you did, if anything, to feel better (and whether or not it worked). You can also write a letter to the person who upset you, saying what you want to say without worrying about repercussions or issues. Reread your journal periodically to learn how you handle emotions, notice a pattern in triggers or help you to develop more effective coping skills.
Get Physical
-
Get out and do something physical when you get upset. This can help to channel those negative emotions into a positive endeavor. Put on your running shoes and pound the pavement or go for a walk around the block. Throw on some old clothes and rubber gloves and give your kitchen a good scrub. Put on your favorite music and dance around.
Listen To Music
-
Music has a way of soothing the soul and making almost every person feel content. Turn on your favorite song, put in your headphones and relax to the soothing sounds of your favorite artist for a few minutes. Or crank up the loudest song you can find and channel those upset feelings into the song you hear.
Take a Nap
-
Taking a quick nap can help you to recharge your mental energy and refocus your mind on something positive. Being upset and negative can also be physically draining. Lay down on your couch for about 20 minutes and close your eyes. You will feel better even if you don't fall asleep.
Indulge Your Passion
-
Go shopping. Work on your car. Eat a piece of chocolate (or two or three). Do whatever makes you happy, within reasonable limits for your situation. This will take your mind off what upset you and help you to regain some positive mental and physical energy.
