How to Contact a Psychologist

1
Talk to your family doctor about your mental health concerns. Ask your doctor to refer you to a psychologist in your area. Physicians usually have a list of professionals in a variety of specialties to whom they refer patients in mental distress.
-
2
Contact your state psychological association if you don't have a family doctor or don't feel comfortable asking him for a referral to a psychologist. Ask your state association for contact information for psychologists in your area.
-
3
Seek a recommendation for a psychologist from someone you trust. Don't feel awkward about this, as the stigma of talking to a mental health professional is a mostly self-imposed pressure. Many people talk to a therapist of some kind.
-
4
Check the credentials of the psychologist you are considering contacting. Make sure they hold at least a master's degree in psychology and that they are accredited with a local licensing body.
-
5
Call the psychologists you're interested in seeing or who have been recommended to you. Ask them what type of work they specialize in. Psychologists have areas of focus, and you should look for one that works specifically in the field that you have concerns in. For instance, if looking for help with an addiction, seek a psychologist with addictions counseling experience.
