How to Move With an AOT Order

An Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) order is a legal order placing mentally ill patients under the supervision of the state department of mental health offices throughout the U.S. Patients who are placed with an AOT are generally unable to make legal or medical decisions on their own and require the help of a government entity and physician. Sometimes during treatment, a change in residence may better fit the needs of the patient. Before moving, you must work with all agencies to ensure your safety and the safety of others when dealing with an AOT order.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your caseworker through your state's department of mental health. Before you are able to move, your caseworker must be made aware of your intentions and be given the address of your desired new home and names of anyone who will be living with you.

    • 2

Allow a home inspection by your caseworker. She is required to ensure that the home is safe and you are in a stable environment as per your care plan. Certain accommodations regarding your diagnosis may be required such as handicapped ramps or accessible parking. Your new residence must meet local and state housing codes.

    • 3

Attend any hearings scheduled by your physician and caseworker. Some AOT patients must have a hearing to ensure that the move is beneficial and will not interfere with the set treatment plan. While under a state AOT, you cannot move to another state or country without approval of the courts issuing the AOT.

    • 4

Move your personal belongings into your new home upon approval by the courts, your physician and your caseworker. Do not attempt your move until it is approved. If you are denied the ability to move into the home, you have the option of inpatient treatment at an approved facility or staying in the home you currently occupy given you are not being evicted.
