1
Talk to your psychologist about your concerns, if you feel comfortable. Your psychologist will be able to recommend a psychiatrist and help schedule an appointment for you. Your psychologist can also make sure your new psychiatrist has your medical records for continuity of care.
-
2
Call your insurance company, if you are insured. Your insurance company will be able to provide you with psychiatrists that are covered under your insurance plan.
-
3
Search online databases for psychiatrists in your area. You can read over reviews and find out more information about psychiatrists in your community.
-
4
Make an appointment with a psychiatrist. For first visits, you may have to wait a couple of weeks or longer before you can be seen. Continue to meet with your psychologist in the meantime to ensure that you continue to receive treatment.
-
5
Attend your appointment with your new medical provider. Make sure to sign a release of information so that your psychiatrist can get your medical records if she doesn't already have them.
-
6
Call your psychologist to cancel your next scheduled appointment if you have decided to just see the psychiatrist. In some cases, if you don't cancel your appointment you may be charged for the missed appointment.
