Wall Padding Regulations
Wall padding appears in school gyms, athletic arenas, sensory rooms and seclusion rooms. Few official regulations exist governing the use of wall padding, but industry standards ensure that padding keeps users safe and healthy.-
Fireproof
-
The only official, national regulation on wall padding exists in regards to fireproofing. The Insulation Contractors Association of America's ASTM E 84-05 states that no exposed surfaces, like walls, can consist of flammable materials. Wall padding must have a fire resistant cover as a result.
Thickness
-
Wall padding ranges from one inch to two and a half inches thick. Thicker foams offer greater protection against injury, but high density foams provide adequate protection while reducing the necessary thickness, thus granting more room for movement.
Secure Attachment
-
Restraint rooms and calming rooms in healthcare facilities often use fixing plates and screws to attach wall padding, as this option attaches the padding most securely. Heavy duty Velcro works adequately well for less demanding settings, like school gymnasiums.
Cleanliness
-
The U.S. Center for Disease Control recommends that wall padding in athletic settings should be washed daily to prevent the spread of flu and other germs. Most wall padding comes with a vinyl cover that you can wash with mild soap and water.
