Can Psychiatrists Share Information?
Visiting a psychiatrist is a largely confidential meeting. There are a few issues a health professional must report to the police or agency responsible, especially if you or someone you know is in danger or has been hurt or abused.-
Child or Elder Abuse
-
Beginning in the 1960s, child abuse is reportable to the Child Services Agency and the local police. If an elderly person is being abused, the psychiatrist will also legally have to report it to the authorities.
A Danger to Yourself
-
If you are in danger of harming yourself, a psychiatrist will report you to an institution and you may be placed under care to prevent you from doing so.
Domestic Abuse
-
Many states require medical professionals, including psychiatrists to report any cases of suspected domestic violence.
