How to Find a Good Psychiatrist

If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or another brain-related illness, a good psychiatrist is indispensable to your treatment team. Much like a quarterback uses skill and precision to lead his team to victory, a good psychiatrist uses his expertise to move you toward your goal of wellness. His knowledge helps to chart a course beyond the obstacles in front of you. He can manage a crisis and come up with a game plan to keep you moving in the right direction. Finding a good psychiatrist is worth the time, effort and expense.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your need. Not every psychiatrist will fit the needs of you or your loved one. Some psychiatrists specialize in treating older patients (geriatric), others treat children (pediatric) and still others specialize in treating a specific condition.

    • 2

Know your budget. Although many psychiatrists take insurance, others do not. Your budget may determine whether you chose a doctor covered by your insurance or pay out-of-pocket for doctor visits.

    • 3

Widen your search. A good psychiatrist may not be as close to home as you would like. When looking for a specific specialty or a psychiatrist who accepts your insurance, you may need to consider driving to another town.

    • 4

Use trusted referrals. It is best to have a good recommendation from someone who has experience with the doctor. The American Psychiatric Association recommends starting with your own physician. Additionally, you can check with family, friends and members of support groups in your area.

Ask questions. When calling to make an appointment with a recommended psychiatrist, ask if he is board certified. A board certified psychiatrist has passed a national examination which is given by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. This is one indication of competency in a medical specialty. Also, ask if he has privileges at a hospital in case inpatient treatment should become necessary.

    • 6

Make an appointment. A good psychiatrist may be booked for months in advance. Don't let this discourage you. Schedule the appointment and ask to be put on a cancellation list. You can always cancel the appointment if you find a another psychiatrist who can see you sooner.

Evaluate the doctor. Even a doctor with a good reputation may not be the right fit for you. Finding a good psychiatrist may take some trial and error. Don't feel like you are stuck with the first doctor you find.
