How to Select CAT Therapy Training

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is used to help patients with disorders such as depression, stress, anxiety and personal relationship issues. Previous and unsuccessful coping mechanisms are replaced by more constructive strategies for bringing about change in a new, positive and healthier direction. The Association for Cognitive Analytic Therapy (ACAT) offers professional therapists a variety of training options that are flexible and responsive to the needs of each individual in the form of CAT theory and practice training groups.

      Attend introduction CAT training courses. Receive certificates of attendance from several introductory workshops that last--in most cases--for several days.

      Select practitioner training courses for core professionals wanting to enhance their psychotherapy skills by learning the methods and theory of CAT. These university courses that offer a diploma can be found in a variety of cities and countries. They will lead to eligibility requirements for ACAT membership and becoming an accredited CAT practitioner.

      Complete the two-year CAT practitioner training to become eligible for the psychotherapy CAT training known as the Inter-regional Residential ACAT Psychotherapy Training (IRRAPT) which is a two-year residential program. Successful completion of this training will establish you as a Cognitive Analytic Psychotherapist.

      Follow the guidelines for application procedures on achieving the "accreditation of prior learning" certificate. ACAT recognizes past training and work experience in CAT therapy if it is equivalent to the current standards set by ACAT. Additional training may be required before issuance of this accreditation.
