How to Find a Schema Therapist

Developed by Jeffrey E. Young, schema therapy is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy. It also utilizes techniques from other therapeutic approaches, including attachment, Gestalt, constructivist, and psychoanalytic. (Ref. 1.) Like cognitive behavioral therapy, schema therapy is a systematic treatment approach that "can be brief, intermediate, or longer term, depending on the patient." (Ref. 1.) Schema therapy is not suited for "acute psychiatric symptoms," but rather to treat issues such as "chronic depression and anxiety, difficult couples problems, and long-standing difficulties in maintaining satisfying intimate relationships." (Ref. 1.) You can locate a schema therapist by following several simple steps.
