Methylphenidate was created in 1944. Ciba Pharmaceutical Company began marketing methylphenidate in 1954.
Dosing

Methylphenidate is available in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg tablets. Immediate release (Ritalin) and extended release (Concerta) forms of methylphenidate are available.
Interactions

Methylphenidate should not be taken by individuals taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), since it may lead to severe hypertension or heart failure. Caution is advised when taking methylphenidate with blood pressure medications, anticonvulsants and antidepressants, since it may decrease the effectiveness of these medications.
Side Effects

Common side effects of methylphenidate include reduced appetite, headache, increased blood pressure and heart rate, insomnia, anxiety and nausea. Serious, but rare, side effects include skin rash, hypertension, seizure and psychosis.
Abuse and Dependence

Methylphenidate has a high potential for abuse and addiction, especially with individuals with a history of stimulant drug abuse, including methamphetamine and cocaine. Discuss any history of drug abuse with your physician prior to taking methylphenidate.
