Haldol Side Effects
Haldol is the brand name of a substance known as haloperidol, an antipsychotic drug used primarily to treat cases of schizophrenia, delirium and other common psychotic disorders. It is administered as an intramuscular injection with dosage of 2 to 5mg.-
Common Side Effects
-
Side effects that are most commonly reported in patients using Haldol include anxiety, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, increased libido, insomnia, nausea, restlessness and vomiting.
Serious Side Effects
-
Though rare, there are a number of serious side effects associated with the use of Haldol. Cataracts, jaundice, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and tardive dystonia have all been reported in patients who have used Haldol.
Bronchopneumonia
-
The risk of developing bronchopneumonia is another serious side effect in patients with weak immune or respiratory systems. Several fatalities have been linked directly to cases of bronchopneumonia which developed as a result of taking Haldol.
Increased Mortality Rate
-
Like with all antipsychotic medications, elderly patients who take Haldol suffer the risk of an increased mortality rate. This risk is even more significant in patients who suffer from dementia and dementia-related psychosis.
Who Should Take Caution
-
Some individuals have a higher chance of experience these side effects than others. Patients with cardiovascular disorders, those who are receiving anticoagulant or anticonvulsant medication and those with a history of allergic reactions should use extra caution when taking Haldol.
