Symptoms of Adult ADD Medications

Government approved medications for adult attention deficit disorder (ADD) are designed to increase one's attention and reduce compulsive activity, such as too much talking. These drugs are only available by prescription and are considered safe for most people. However, there is a risk of unpleasant symptoms or side effects from adult ADD medications.
  1. Adderall

    • Adderall is comprised of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine and can be used to treat adult ADD. Possible adverse symptoms include changes in sex drive, weight loss and headache.

    Concerta

    • Concerta is a long-acting stimulant medication used to treat adult ADD. Possible side effects include nervousness, sleeping problems, painful menstruation and muscle tightness.

    Ritalin

    • Ritalin is comprised of the stimulant methylphenidate and available to treat adult ADD. Possible adverse symptoms include numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation in the hands and feet, as well as stomachache.

    Dexedrine

    • Dexedrine is comprised of dextroamphetamine and is approved for adult ADD treatment. Possible adverse symptoms include constipation, loss of appetite, dry mouth and unpleasant taste in the mouth.

    Desoxyn

    • Desoxyn is prescription methamphetamine and is still used in some treatment-resistant cases of adult ADD, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Possible side effects include increased heart rate, increased body temperature and increased blood pressure.
