The Side Effects of Abilify
Abilify (Aripiprazole) is an atypical antipsychotic medication marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka America. According to PubMed.com, Abilify is effective for treating manic symptoms in bipolar I disorder.-
History
-
Abilify was first synthesized in Japan by Otsuka. It was approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in 2002 and has since been approved for treating bipolar disorder and depression.
Function
-
Abilify is used to treat mixed and acute manic episodes caused by bipolar disorder. It's also prescribed for psychotic symptoms associated with schizophrenia and as an adjunct medication for treatment-resistant depression.
Effects
-
Abilify is a selective, partial agonist of D2. It causes a reduction in psychotic phenomena experienced, as well as some drowsiness and sedation. Commonly reported side effects include stomach upset, lightheadedness, blurred vision and insomnia, with less common side effects including weight gain, tremors and seizures.
Prevention/Solution
-
To reduce the incidence and severity of side effects, avoid taking Abilify with alcohol and other depressants, as this can cause dangerous sedation. Stay well-hydrated and avoid standing or sitting up too fast to reduce dizziness. Ask your doctor before taking Abilify if you suffer from liver or kidney problems, diabetes, a history of seizures, heart disease or breast cancer.
Warning
-
As with all antipsychotics, Abilify carries a risk of tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that may be permanent. Other serious risks include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, severe allergic reaction, worsening of diabetes, and stroke (in some dementia patients).
