The Side Effects of Prozac

Prozac is a prescription medication that is commonly used to treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental and medical conditions. As with any medication, there are some possible side effects. Being familiar with them may help you and your doctor determine whether your dosage is right, and whether you are taking the right medication.
  1. Digestive Side Effects

    • Some of the most common side effects with Prozac are digestive issues. Diarrhea, cramping, bloating, vomiting, nausea and less appetite are some of the things that some people experience.

    Alertness and Sleep

    • Insomnia, being sleepy during the day, nightmares or unusual dreams, excessive yawning, changes in vision, and being dizzy are possible.

    Sexual Side Effects

    • Many people have some sexual side effects. Loss of sexual desire, problems with ejaculation, and impotence are among the most common.

    Organ Function

    • Some people notice a heart arrhythmia or palpitations, and chest pain. Asthma or other breathing problems are also possible. There are some people who experience kidney or liver problems including jaundice or kidney stones.

    Other Physical Side Effects

    • Fever, high blood pressure, chills, increased or decreased appetite, sweating, feeling or looking flushed, having excessive thirst or dry mouth, and feeling shaky or more nervous than usual are also possible.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Though rare, there is the potential to experience severe or possibly life-threatening side effects with Prozac. Increased anxiety, suicidal thoughts, aggressive behavior, congestive heart failure, kidney damage and brain damage are among the rare side effects some people have experienced.
