Instructions

    • 1

Be patient. Lexapro can take 4 to 6 weeks to reach its full effect as well as for many of the initial side effects to diminish.

    • 2

Monitor side effects to show your doctor and to determine if they are improving and which ones cause the most concern.

    • 3

See a psychiatrist instead of a family doctor as psychiatrists specialize more in psychiatric medications and may be more knowledgeable of tips and tweaks to medications. Ask your doctor about medication adjustments. Sometimes just a dosage adjustment can make a big difference in the intensity or amount of side effects.

    • 4

Remind yourself of the benefits of the medication. Feeling frustrated can often make medication seem like it is not worth it, but remind yourself why you started taking it in the first place. Medication is often the lesser of two evils.

    • 5

Take Lexapro with food to lessen nausea and gastrointestinal upset. Suck on hard candies to increase saliva production for dry mouth side effects.
