Information on Depakote for ADHD Treatment

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be problematic for patients. Controlling the symptoms and racing thoughts can get out of hand and cause social interaction problems or, in some cases, injury to self and/or others. But with the right medications and additional help, symptoms can be controlled. Among the prescribed medication choices is Depakote.
  1. Symptoms of ADHD

    • ADHD is a neurological condition in which the patient has a hard time concentrating and controlling mental or physical impulses. Energy levels can also be hard to reign in. This lack of control can lead to symptoms such as an urge to climb furniture, inability to finish assigned tasks and blurting out thoughts and ideas. People with ADHD can also demonstrate a lack of patience for things such as waiting in line or waiting their turn.

    Depakote

    • Depakote is an anticonvulsant medication, typically prescribed to patients with seizure problems. It helps prevent seizures associated with some types of epilepsy. Depakote (known as Epival in Canada or Mexico) has also been prescribed to prevent migraine headaches.

    Depakote and ADHD

    • Depakote is also controls mood swings in patients, which is why it is sometimes prescribed to ADHD patients. Depakote increases levels of special chemicals called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Increased GABA contributes to positive, balanced moods. Children diagnosed with ADHD sometimes manifest explosive behavior or extremely negative moods due to an inability to control their impulses. Depakote is sometimes prescribed to patients who have built a tolerance to Ritalin.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects from Depakote are significant. Many patients experience tremors, nausea, headaches or drowsiness. In rare cases, Depakote can also cause constipation, flu-like symptoms or even hair loss. There is also a possibility of weight gain when taking Depakote.

    Interactions

    • There are some other medications that ADHD patients may take that do not interact well with Depakote. Some that take Ritalin have reported additional side effects of teeth grinding and more persistent shakes. Patients on sedatives such as Valium or Klonopin should also make their doctors aware. Failure to report these additional medications can result in serious injury or death.
