Lexapro Anti-Depressant Side Effects

Lexapro (generic name: escitalopram oxalate) is one of the most frequently prescribed antidepressants that belong to the serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family. Manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals Inc., the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Lexapro in August 2002. Lexapro is generally well tolerated by most people; however, like any other medication, there are a number of potential side effects and adverse reactions that can occur.
  1. Types

    • People on monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) such as Azilect, Eldepryl, Marplan and Parnate are advised to wait at least 14 days after stopping their medication before starting Lexapro as dangerous and potentially fatal reactions can occur when both classes of medications are combined.

    Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects attributed with Lexapro include abdominal discomfort, decreased libido, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, ejaculation delay, excessive perspiration, fatigue, headaches, heartburn, indigestion, insomnia and nausea.

    Less Common Side Effects

    • Although infrequent, Lexapro may also cause chills, decreased appetite, flu-like symptoms, inability to achieve orgasm, pain in the joints and muscles, shortness of breath or troubled breathing, tightness of the chest, weakness, wheezing and vomiting.

    Additional Advisories

    • Though rare, Lexapro can trigger skin- and appendage-related syndromes such as acne, eczema, dermatitis, alopecia, dry lips and other skin discomforts (blisters, itchiness, irritations, redness and overall increased sensitivity). Cardiovascular and nervous system reactions, including hypertension, involuntary muscle contractions, palpitations, tremors, twitching and vertigo, have been stated in reported in a small amount of cases.

    Warning

    • Agitation, amnesia, auditory hallucinations, increased anxiety or depression, mood swings and thoughts of self harm or suicide, are serious psychological side effects that should be reported to the doctor immediately.

    Considerations

    • It's worth noting that many of the side effects a person may experience while on Lexapro subside or disappear completely after their body becomes accustomed to the drug and its dosage.
