Clozaril is prescribed to people with schizophrenia to reduce the symptoms of mental illness. It can also be prescribed to people with schizoaffective disorder, which presents symptoms of both schizophrenia and other mood disorders. In both cases, Clozaril can decrease the likelihood of suicide.

Some people taking Clozaril will experience drowsiness, dizziness, vision problems, drooling, headaches and constipation. None of these side effects is cause for concern, and in many people they will become less noticeable the longer they take the medicine, according to information from the drugmaker, Novartis.
Warnings

In rare cases, Clozaril can cause serious and even life-threatening complications, including a condition called agranulocytosis in which users have a low white blood cell count, according to Novartis. Before taking Clozaril, your doctor will order a blood test to make sure you have a proper level of white blood cells and then you will have weekly blood tests while taking the medication. Also, taken at high doses, Clozaril can cause seizures.
Drug Interactions

Some medications are known to interfere with the effectiveness of Clozaril or may increase the odds of experiencing side effects. Benzodiazepines taken with Clozaril increase the risk of heart or breathing problems. Hydantoins, barbiturates and rifampin decrease the effectiveness of Clozaril.
