The Side Effects of Lexipro

Lexapro is an antidepressant that is an SSRI: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. When chemicals in our brain are unbalanced, there is a risk of developing anxiety and/or depression. Lexapro is generally given to a patient in order to treat anxiety as well as major depressive disorders. As with any antidepressant, there are always side effects that can occur. If you experience any of these side effects, consult your doctor immediately.
  1. Serious Side Effects

    • Headache, inability to concentrate, problems with your memory, fainting, seizure, a sense of weakness, feeling confused, hallucinating, shallow breathing, or even breathing that stops can all be side effects.

    More Serious Side Effects

    • Stiff muscles, light or profuse sweating, tremors, reflexes that are overactive, high grade fever or fast and/or uneven heartbeat can also occur.

    Other Serious Side Effects

    • Loss of appetite, a sense of not being coordinated, a sense of unsteadiness, vomiting, diarrhea and/or nausea are more potential side effects.

    Less Severe Side Effects

    • There are more minor side effects that can occur while taking Lexapro, including a decrease in sex drive, impotence, trouble having an orgasm, insomnia, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, heartburn, upset stomach, gas, mild nausea, changes in body weight, ringing in the ears, yawning and dry mouth.

    • When taking Lexapro, if you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as a skin rash, hives, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or swelling of the throat, lips, or tongue, seek medical attention right away.

    • If your symptoms worsen or you have new symptoms after your first dose, such as anxiety, panic attacks, problems sleeping, restlessness, hostility, agitation, irritability, heightened depression, or if you have thoughts of suicide or doing harm to yourself, contact your doctor right away.
