What does an optitionist do?
Optician
Opticians fit, repair, and dispense corrective lenses (prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses) to people who have vision problems, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. They make sure that the lenses in the eyeglasses are the correct prescription and that the fit of the frames is comfortable and secure. Opticians may also fit and repair nonprescription sunglasses and safety glasses.
An optician's job duties typically include:
* Conducting vision tests and other eye-related tests to determine the best type of corrective lenses
* Recommending the best type of corrective lenses and frames based on the patient's needs and budget
* Fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses
* Making sure that the patient is comfortable with the fit of the eyeglasses or contact lenses
* Repairing eyeglasses and contact lenses
* Providing customer service to patients
Education and Training
Opticians typically have an associate's degree from a community college or technical school. Some opticians also complete a bachelor's degree in vision science or a related field.
Optician programs provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to work in a variety of settings, including private optometry offices, optical stores, and hospitals. Students in optician programs typically take courses in anatomy, physiology, optics, and dispensing techniques. They also gain hands-on experience working with patients in a clinical setting.
Salary
The median annual wage for opticians was $38,800 in May 2019. The top 10% of earners made more than $65,000, while the bottom 10% earned less than $25,790.
Job Outlook
The employment of opticians is projected to grow by 16% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is expected to be driven by the increasing demand for corrective lenses, as well as the aging population.
Work Environment
Opticians typically work in private optometry offices or optical stores. They may also work in hospitals or clinics. Most opticians work full-time, although part-time schedules may be available.
