Next, decide if there is a positive alternative. Positive is a key word. If you need to be at work, then not doing it, will cause negative for you. If it is a commitment that can be rescheduled, then you may have a positive alternative to avoid doing what you don't want to do.

If there is no alternative and you must do something you don't want, then begin with self talk. Identify why you have to do something you don't want. Make a list of why it is necessary to do what you don't want to do.

Next, convince yourself of the positive in doing what you don't want to do.
For example, you won't have to worry about money, or you will make someone else happy, etc.

Finally, tell yourself you will be not only ok, but better in the end for doing something you don't want to do. You will not only survive doing something you don't want to do, but may have something positive or wonderful occur, because you did something you did not want to do.

Also remember that most of the time, we make the situation worse by how we perceive it. Therefore, instead of thinking you are doing something you don't want to do, think of it as something you MAY enjoy.
