What Is Schizophreniform Disorder?
Schizophreniform disorder is typically diagnosed when symptoms have been present for at least one month, but less than six months. If symptoms persist for six months or more, the diagnosis may be changed to schizophrenia.
The exact cause of schizophreniform disorder is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Schizophreniform disorder is more common in people who have a family history of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. It is also more common in people who have experienced traumatic events, such as childhood abuse or neglect.
There is no cure for schizophreniform disorder, but there are treatments that can help to manage the symptoms. These treatments may include medication, therapy, and social support.
With treatment, most people with schizophreniform disorder are able to live full and productive lives. However, some people may experience ongoing symptoms or may develop schizophrenia.
