Can a psychologist become psychiatrist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists are both mental health professionals, but there are some key differences between the two professions. Psychologists typically have a doctorate in psychology (PhD), while psychiatrists have a medical degree (MD) and have completed residency training in psychiatry. This difference in training means that psychiatrists can prescribe medication, while psychologists cannot. Additionally, psychiatrists may see patients for more complicated conditions, such as severe mental illness, while psychologists may see patients for a wider range of issues, such as depression, anxiety, and relationship problems.

In some cases, psychologists may go on to become psychiatrists by completing medical school and residency training. However, this is not a common path, as it typically takes several additional years of training and most psychologists find themselves more suited to providing therapy with clients directly than becoming doctors themselves.
