Initial Side Effects of Seroquel

Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) is a medication that is prescribed to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. But as is the case in most prescription drugs, there are some side effects to consider.
  1. Benefits

    • Seroquel is known to be beneficial in treating symptoms of schizophrenia, including delusions, hallucinations, social withdrawal, low energy and apathy.

    Considerations

    • If you are on Seroquel, take it exactly as your doctor has prescribed it. According to Drugs.com, if you skip days or overuse Seroquel, you are at risk of overdosing, side effects (fever, faintness, muscles weakness), or continued psychotic episodes.

    Serious Side Effects

    • When you first start taking Seroquel, there is a possibility that you will develop thoughts of suicide, particularly if you are under 24 years old. In the February 2009 issue of "Diabetes Care," the American Diabetes Association warns users that Seroquel can lead to diabetes.

    Less Serious Side Effects

    • There are also less serious side effects, such as drowsiness, weakness, dry mouth, constipation and upset stomach.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Some side effects can be avoided with a doctor's adjustment to your dosage. For instance, if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or liver or kidney disease, an adjusted dosage may keep you safe.
