Consider the severity of the symptoms. The symptoms will significantly interfere with the individual's daily functioning. A mental health professional can distinguish specifically what type of Schizoaffective Disorder (Bipolar or Depressive) is present and what type of treatment is appropriate. There are many forms of treatment which can be effective in managing the above symptoms. Some people with this disorder experience little to no symptoms after treatment.

Remain a support to the individual struggling with the symptoms. Often it is difficult for the individual to recognize their symptoms. With patience and the help of a mental health professional, the individual can learn to identify their own signs and symptoms and take an active role in their treatment decisions. There are also support groups that a professional can suggest to aid the family and friends of the struggling individual.
